The Government of Nepal has officially designated Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel as the 18th Governor of Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), concluding a lengthy vacancy at the leadership of the nation’s central banking institution.
This resolution was made during a gathering of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday evening. The appointment follows a suggestion made earlier that day by the Governor Recommendation Committee, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel. The committee had narrowed it down to three candidates: Dr. Biswo Nath Poudel, Acting Governor Dr. Neelam Dhungana, and former Secretary Dinesh Bhattarai.
Among the trio, Dr. Poudel was identified as the preferred candidate and subsequently approved by the Cabinet. His nomination is believed to have been made under the Nepali Congress allocation, following a political agreement reached between Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba.
Dr. Poudel is a highly regarded economist and former Vice Chairperson of the National Planning Commission.
